Coming soon: Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 e and GLA 250 e plug-in hybrids

Mercedes-Benz has announced details of three new plug-in hybrid models – the CLA 250 e Coupe, CLA 250 e Shooting Brake and GLA 250 e. The new models join the existing A250 e and A250 e saloon models, completing the A-Class plug-in hybrid range.

Each of the new models uses the same hybrid powertrain, which combines a 1.3-litre petrol engine with a 74kW electric motor to give a total output of 218 horsepower and a substantial 450 Nm of torque. Both new CLA 250 e models are capable of 0-62mph in less than seven seconds, with the heavier GLA SUV taking a fraction longer, at 7.1 seconds.

A maximum electric-only range of between 39 and 44 miles (using the latest WLTP standards) means that each of the new models may make it possible for many drivers to complete their daily commute using battery power alone. Mercedes-Benz says that charging the battery from 10-100 per cent takes about 1hr 45mins using a home wallbox charger, while it can be charged from 10-80 per cent in around 25 minutes using a higher-powered DC charger.
The CLA 250 e Coupe and CLA e Shooting Brake go on sale in April 2020, while the GLA 250 e will be available a month later. First deliveries of all three will start in summer.
