Shortlist announced for 2024 World Car of the Year
Three very different electric cars make up the shortlist for the 2024 World Car of the Year

The Kia EV9, Volvo EX30 and BYD Seal have been shortlisted for World Car of the Year 2024, it was announced on Monday at the Geneva Motor Show. All three contenders are electric cars, but range in size and price - from the expensive, seven-seat Kia to the small but smart Volvo. Interestingly, the Seal is a saloon rather than an SUV, a sign that not everyone in the world values SUVs above all else.
The World Car Awards have been running for 20 years, with a jury comprising 100 motoring journalists from all the major markets, including the UK, India, China, America, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Australia. Erin Baker, Editorial Director at Auto Trader, is one of the jurors. New cars shortlisted this year for an award include BMW 5-Series and Mercedes EQ for Luxury Car of the Year, the Hyundai Ioniq 5N and BMW M2 for World Performance Car of the Year, the Lexus LBX and BYD Dolphin for World Urban Car and the Ferrari Purosangue and Toyota Prius for World car Design of the Year. Erin Baker said: "I love being a World Car Awards juror, because you get to see what other countries are buying, and what global car brands are designing and selling in other markets. It's also a stark reminder that, while in Europe we are all heading towards electrification, in other, less wealthy countries, fossil fuels remain the only viable choice. Rich countries need to think carefully about their part in helping the rest of the world move away from burning hydrocarbons, because the climate crisis affects us all, and we need to be driving down this road together." Renault Scenic Wins Car Of The Year 2024
The Geneva Motor Show was also host to the announcement of the 2024 European Car of The Year, with the Renault Scenic taking the prize. It was a good day for Renault, who unveiled the 5 EV within minutes of collecting the award. The electric Scenic, which goes on sale in the UK very soon, came out on top of a shortlist comprising seven finalists - including the three cars in the frame for the World Car of the Year. "This recognition demonstrates that we have made the right choices: record-breaking range, generous and inviting roominess, all with a closely managed environmental footprint," said Renault following the win.
