The hotly anticipated winner of the World Car of the Year 2024 has been announced as the Kia EV9. The shortlist for the World Car of the Year Award included three very different all-electric contenders when it was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show last month. Ultimately the EV9 beat the Volvo EX30
and the BYD Seal to the prize. Following the announcement Paul Philpott, President and CEO, Kia UK said "This is fantastic recognition for such an important vehicle in our ever-evolving line-up. It's made all the more important due to recognition from such esteemed journalists from the UK and around the world. I'm very proud of the Kia team for bringing such a sensational vehicle to market. We are fast becoming a true leader in electric vehicles." To be considered for the award the EV9 had to meet the strict eligibility criteria before being tested and voted for by a global panel of 100 automotive journalists, including Auto Trader’s very own Editorial Director, Erin Baker. In addition to the overall car of the year there were five other awards up for grabs. Kia’s EV9 also took home the World Electric Vehicle of the Year Award, beating the BMW i5 and the Volvo EX30. However, the EX30 didn’t leave the awards empty handed, winning the World Urban Car prize. The new Toyota Prius won the World Car Design of the Year Award, while the World Performance Car was the Hyundai Ioniq 5N. Completing the list, the BMW 5 Series was voted World Luxury Car.
