Although sadly no longer built here the UK Honda Civic remains a long-standing favourite among British drivers and widely praised for its practicality and reliability alike. Having embraced electrification with a new and typically innovative hybrid system this latest Civic has proved itself an efficiency champion and viable alternative to electric cars as well, as Rory Reid has been finding out over the course of a long-term test.
Strong words given the way things are going in the market. But for for the many drivers who might not have a driveway or off-street parking to fit a home charging wallbox hybrids still have an important role to play as the 2030 cut-off for sales of purely internal combustion engine (ICE) cars looms large.
Honda’s hybrid system doesn’t need plugging in, the ICE powertrain, electric motor and battery all coordinating their efforts automatically. As Rory has been finding out that makes life with the Civic simplicity itself, the proof in the pudding being how long it goes between fuel stops. And whether real or imagined, range anxiety and fears of an over-stretched public charging network are a real concern for many contemplating the switch to electric, cars like the Civic hopefully providing the perfect stepping-stone in your own journey to a zero emissions future.
Beyond that the Honda is just a fundamentally decent car. Why? Well, let Rory demonstrate for himself as he talks you through his experiences of living with it. And how, in its understated way, it’s an impressive performer in more ways than one.
