Like a regular hatchback but posher – Rory’s been driving the new Audi A3 to find out if it’s the new class leader

Back in the day Focuses, Astras and Golfs were the heartland of the mainstream car market and followed a pretty consistent format. But now the premium players have moved in and, instead, you can have a Mercedes, a BMW or Audi with all the same practical appeal. The latest A-Class
has moved the tech game on, BMW’s 1 Series has finally gone front-wheel drive like the rest of the class and now Audi is weighing in with an all-new A3, packed with all the latest technology and with an interior that looks … like a Lamborghini? So Rory says, this perhaps not as big a leap as you might think given Audi actually owns Lamborghini these days. For sure, Audi has embraced the latest trends in configurable screens, touch operation, voice control and all the rest, though Rory’s not entirely convinced this is progress in all areas. Sharing much with the new generation of Volkswagen Golf this new A3 puts clear ground between the relative mainstream that car represents and the premium upper crust of the hatchback market.
