Renault has announced a brand new Twingo, revived as an electric city car that will be priced well below £20,000. The company says it will be a "game-changer" for electric cars. They all say that, right? But there are some good reasons to believe that the new Twingo EV could have a transformative effect on the electric car market when it shows up in late 2025.
The first and most obvious reason is the price, which Renault claims will be close to 18,000 euros in Europe (around £16,000), meaning it will be available for "less than 100 euros per month." They’re the words of Renault CEO Luca de Meo, who unveiled the next Twingo in concept form at the Capital Market Day in Paris.
According to de Meo, the Twingo is "an ace in our pocket… a new silver bullet for sustainable mobility in the urban environment." Standing next to a green Twingo concept – which looked surprisingly close to a production car – de Meo claimed that the car will be developed and brought to market "in record time, from concept to production in two years – matching the time of the Chinese manufacturers."
That parenthesis is telling, because it nods to the disruptive effect that the new wave of Chinese electric cars is already having on the European market. Cars like the Ora Funky Cat, BYD Dolphin and MG4 are giving buyers cost-effective, high-tech alternatives to EVs from European 'legacy' manufacturers like Renault.
The Twingo is a strong response to that. Efficiency will be "best-in-class", with Renault claiming 10kWh of energy use per 100km travelled. For comparison, Tesla quotes 14kWh per 100km for a Long Range Tesla Model 3. Furthermore, the Twingo "will emit 75% less CO2 than the average car sold in Europe in 2023" over its lifecycle, and will use 50% fewer materials than the average mid-sized SUV, according to de Meo.
To make this happen, Renault has created a new company called Ampere which will focus on developing electric cars and software, including the new chassis that the Twingo will sit on. Ampere isn’t a car brand, so you won’t see its name or badge on any future products, but the company will partner with other manufacturers to share development costs.
This means that the Twingo is likely to underpin another sub-£20,000 small electric car, possibly from Nissan. You may recall that the last Twingo - which is still produced today in some markets but is no longer available in the UK - was a parts-sharing exercise with Daimler, resulting in the Forfour.
The new chassis underpinning the new Twingo will also form the basis of other Renault EVs, including the forthcoming Renault 5. It will be cutting-edge, featuring vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology which allows the car to send its charge back into the grid or charge other electrical items - from a toaster to another car. So far, V2G tech has been the preserve of more expensive electric cars, like the Porsche Taycan, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6.
The new Twingo should come with a 50kW battery, which given the efficiency claims would mean a range of around 300 miles. That will put it ahead of electric versions of the Vauxhall Corsa and Fiat 500. Artificial Intelligence will play a part too, with Ampere’s software team working on an AI assistant for the car called Reno. Reno is, we’re told, a "humanised co-pilot" and was co-developed by the person who created Apple’s Siri. So, miles of fun asking Reno to be salty about Siri and Alexa and Terminator 2.
