The 3008 name may be familiar but this new Peugeot E-3008 is a totally fresh car, and the first built on a next generation electric platform to be shared across brands within the Stellantis family of which Peugeot is a part. More on that in due course, but the headlines for this new E-3008 include bold, coupe-like styling, over 400 miles of electric-only range on the top model and a much expanded, widescreen reinvention of Peugeot’s signature i-Cockpit dashboard design. In size terms the E-3008 launches bang in the middle of the highly competitive mid-size electric car field, up against the likes of the Renault Megane E-Tech 100% Electric and various in-house alternatives from within its own Stellantis family.
• Size-wise the E-3008 replaces the existing 3008, so slots in between the 308 hatchback and 408 crossover • New Panoramic i-Cockpit will be an obvious talking point, interior space and practicality also look good • Peugeot is promising three power outputs based around two battery options, with maximum range of up to 435 miles with the bigger of the two • Standard range version kicks off with 213 horsepower, while the twin-motor all-wheel drive gets 326 horsepower • Production starts early in 2024; UK deliveries some time after

Design and models available

With its combination of chunky crossover stance and sleek, coupe-like roofline the E-3008 is very much on trend, and seemingly shares inspiration with the Citroen ë-C4 from within the same Stellantis family. But the shared engineering underneath is all new, and the E-3008 is the first of a new generation of cars from brands across the group like Peugeot, Citroen, DS, Vauxhall, Fiat and more likely to be built on it. Designed from the outset for electric cars, the battery sits low between the wheels, which are spaced apart lengthways to create short overhangs at the front and rear to help the looks while creating plenty of space in the middle to benefit interior room. Win-win, in other words. This new platform will be available with single motor options powering the front wheels with a choice of standard or long range battery packs, or a more performance oriented twin motor model with all-wheel drive. Two trim levels will be available, and Peugeot says regular and plug-in hybrid versions will follow.

Interior and tech

Peugeot has been going its own way with interior design, its distinctive i-Cockpit design using a small steering wheel with digital instruments above rather than behind it. On newer models these use funky 3D graphics but the E-3008 goes a step further, with a new 21-inch widescreen display sweeping from in front of the driver to the centre of the car in an elegant curved configuration. This is paired with information projected into your line of sight on the windscreen, the 10 configurable i-Toggles (as seen on other Peugeot models) meaning your preferred functions can be stored onto touch-sensitive 'hot keys' for ease of use. Whether you’ll get all this functionality on every trim level remains to be seen, but the Panoramic i-Cockpit layout in the pictures looks as stylish as it is advanced. At a more practical level the space between the front and rear wheels should mean lots of legroom and, from Peugeot’s quoted figures, the boot sounds a decent size as well.

Batteries/range or engines

Peugeot has confirmed two battery options, without actually saying how big they are in terms of kWh capacity. The important news, though, is the promise of 435 miles of range with the best-case combination of the 231 horsepower single motor and bigger battery, a single motor front-wheel drive with the standard battery and dual-motor performance version sitting either side of this model.

Price and release

No information on pricing at the time of writing, but Peugeot has confirmed the E-3008 will be on sale from early 2024, though it doesn’t say whether this is in Europe or across the board. Experience shows right-hand drive markets like the UK sometimes have to wait a little longer, but we’ll find out in due course.

What other cars from Peugeot are due this year?

It’s a busy time for Peugeot at the moment, with a fully electric version of the 308 hatchback coming soon, along with an updated 208 and e-208 family with fresher styling and improved performance for the all electric version.

What other cars that are upcoming will this compete with?

The E-3008 launches into a fiercely competitive sector of the market, and against products from VW’s electric family like the Volkswagen ID.5 and its relations from Skoda, Cupra and Audi. Honda has just launched its new e:Ny1 electric crossover , the Renault Megane E-Tech 100% Electric has impressed us on long-term test and then there are the new Chinese-developed entries to the market like the Smart #1 we reviewed recently, the BYD Atto 3 and many more besides. Suffice to say, if you want a mid-sized electric crossover you’re spoiled for choice!
