How to keep your e-bike safe and secure

Check if your e-bike is legal

Before you buy an e-bike it is very important to check it is legal in the UK. There can be lots of issues with counterfeit electrical goods which don’t meet British or European standards. Although it is tempting to look at cheaper alternatives it is vital you buy your e-bike and e-bike battery from a reputable seller who makes sure that the e-bike meets Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC) requirements,. fulfils the Construction and Use regulations, complies with European standard EN15194 and contains a CE mark, which will tell you that it has passed the relevant directive’s standards. If you are buying separate components it is important you should check that they are compatible. If you are unsure about any of the above, it is perfectly reasonable to ask for clarity on this from the person selling you an e-bike. If you live in an apartment or have limited space, consider using a wall-mounted rack or a ceiling hoist system to keep your e-bike off the ground and out of reach. Ensure that the storage area is well-protected, preferably with a lockable door and sufficient lighting.

Apart from using locks and choosing safe parking spots, there are additional steps you can take to enhance the security of your e-bike.
Consider installing a GPS tracking device, which can help locate your e-bike in case of theft. Additionally, you can remove the battery and take it with you, making the e-bike less appealing to potential thieves.

Protecting your e-bike with insurance is a smart choice. Look for policies that specifically cover e-bikes and provide protection against theft, damage and personal liability. Research different insurance providers to find a plan that suits your needs and budget. Some household insurance policies let you add bikes to the policy for a relatively modest charge, which can prove more cost effective than standalone policies especially if you have a number of bikes in the family.

Despite your best efforts, e-bike theft can still occur. If your e-bike is stolen, act promptly. File a police report and provide them with all relevant information, including the serial number and any identifiable features. Share details of the theft on social media and local community groups to increase the chances of recovery. Notify your insurance provider and follow their instructions to initiate the claims process.
Keeping your e-bike safe requires a proactive approach and a combination of precautionary measures. Stay vigilant, take preventive measures, and enjoy the freedom and joy of riding your e-bike with peace of mind.
