Check if your e-bike is legal

Before you buy an e-bike it is very important to check it is legal in the UK. There can be lots of issues with counterfeit electrical goods which don’t meet British or European standards. Although it is tempting to look at cheaper alternatives it is vital you buy your e-bike and e-bike battery from a reputable seller who makes sure that the e-bike meets Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC) requirements,. fulfils the Construction and Use regulations, complies with European standard EN15194 and contains a CE mark, which will tell you that it has passed the relevant directive’s standards. If you are buying separate components it is important you should check that they are compatible. If you are unsure about any of the above, it is perfectly reasonable to ask for clarity on this from the person selling you an e-bike. E-bikes are legal in the UK, as long as you are 14 or older and the e-bike meets Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC) requirements, which you can read more about here. In the UK there is also a body of UK law that defines the legal safety criteria for bicycles (including e-bikes) to be used on UK roads - known as ‘Construction and Use regulations’ you can read lots more about the law Cycling UK website here. The parts of these Construction and Use regulations which are relevant to e-bikes are:
  • The vehicle must be fitted with a plate which can be easily read. It is commonplace these will be a sticker placed on the frame which will show the manufacturer’s name and motor power output for the e-bike.
  • The power control must be off as default and require constant intervention from the rider to maintain power assistance. This is sometimes called ‘no power without pedalling.’
It is always worth checking for that the e-bike you wish to purchase fulfils the Construction and Use requirements and complies with European standard EN15194.
The e-bike you look to purchase should also contain a CE mark, which will tell you that it has passed the relevant directive’s standards.

Register your e-bike for warranty

One of the first steps towards securing your e-bike is to register it for warranty with the manufacturer or retailer. This not only validates your ownership but also helps in recovering your e-bike in case of theft.
Keep records of the serial number, purchase receipt and any other important documents related to your e-bike's purchase and warranty.

Securing your e-bike for safety

Where to park

Choosing the right parking spot is crucial to minimise the risk of theft.
Always opt for well-lit, populated areas with secure bike racks or designated cycle parking spaces. Avoid leaving your e-bike unattended anywhere, even if it ‘feels’ safe.

What locks to use

Investing in high-quality locks is essential for deterring thieves. Consider using a combination of a sturdy U-lock and a heavy-duty chain or cable lock. Ensure that the locks you choose are resistant to cutting or picking.
Always secure your e-bike through the frame and both wheels to an immovable object, such as a bike rack.

Where to store your e-bike

When not in use, it's important to store your e-bike in a secure location. If you live in an apartment or have limited space, consider using a wall-mounted rack or a ceiling hoist system to keep your e-bike off the ground and out of reach. Ensure that the storage area is well-protected, preferably with a lockable door and sufficient lighting.

Keep your bike secure

Apart from using locks and choosing safe parking spots, there are additional steps you can take to enhance the security of your e-bike.
Consider installing a GPS tracking device, which can help locate your e-bike in case of theft. Additionally, you can remove the battery and take it with you, making the e-bike less appealing to potential thieves.

Take out insurance

Protecting your e-bike with insurance is a smart choice. Look for policies that specifically cover e-bikes and provide protection against theft, damage and personal liability. Research different insurance providers to find a plan that suits your needs and budget. Some household insurance policies let you add bikes to the policy for a relatively modest charge, which can prove more cost effective than standalone policies especially if you have a number of bikes in the family.

What to do if your e-bike is stolen?

Despite your best efforts, e-bike theft can still occur. If your e-bike is stolen, act promptly. File a police report and provide them with all relevant information, including the serial number and any identifiable features. Share details of the theft on social media and local community groups to increase the chances of recovery. Notify your insurance provider and follow their instructions to initiate the claims process.
Keeping your e-bike safe requires a proactive approach and a combination of precautionary measures. Stay vigilant, take preventive measures, and enjoy the freedom and joy of riding your e-bike with peace of mind.
